Tile Composition Project

These are the digital compositions I created for Advanced Drawing.

I visited the websites of various tiling companies, grabbing a number of them that seemed visually interesting (nice texture, color, pattern, etc). Because most of the tiles were already perfect or near perfect squares, I could arrange them together in a systematically organized way to create the illusion of a scene. The theme I went for was the idea of elemental temples or dungeons, inspired from old 8-bit and 16-bit video games, as well as a bit of influence from Hellenistic mosaics found throughout the ancient world. Because there was such a vast multitude of tile types, the combinations were endless.

I made sure not to restrict myself to mere squares, however. I altered the shape and size of a lot of them to create even more possibilities, which gave the composition as a whole as well as its little details a large degree of freedom.

 Lava Dungeon
 Aqua Dungeon
 Forest Dungeon

And these are the original compositions that inspired the above three:
 An underground temple
Ice Palace

As you might notice, these earlier ones (underground and ice) are less experimental, less detailed, and less free in their form. I can say that I truly learned a lot about creating digital compositions in Photoshop throughout the process, and the evolution and increased experimentation over time really shows.

I highly recommend you click on each image, then right click on THAT and open the image in a new tab. This will let you view the full size. The reason I say this is because every little detail is extremely important.
